This season, we are producing 14.5oz heavyweight fleece on one of the few old-fashioned hanging knitting machines still in existence in Japan, which can only be made in Wakayama, the production area. The surface yarn is made of tightly twisted US cotton. It has a dry touch with little oil, and is characterized by a tightly woven, stiff texture.
The back thread is made of brown cotton, a rare long-staple cotton from Zimbabwe. The cotton is carefully hand-picked at an altitude of 1,500m, leaving little damage to the fibers and using minimal chemicals, making it gentle on the skin and soft and fluffy. Its high heat retention is also an attractive feature. Another point is that it is finished in the same process as vintage sweatshirts using one of the few brushing machines that can process the round body.
Freedom sleeves are cut to create a beautiful S-shaped curve from the shoulder to the underarm. A functional design created by our predecessors that allows for movement. This versatile technique with no underarm seams was devised to allow for greater freedom of movement of the arms, but it was difficult to sew and unsuitable for mass production, so it is a vintage detail that was popular in the 40s and 50s but disappeared.
The sewing is done with a three- needle front stitch.
The cuffs and hem are tight enough to provide a secure hold.
This old-fashioned hanging knitting machine can knit about one meter of fabric in one hour, a speed that is unthinkable in today's world where production efficiency is sought after. However, by knitting slowly over time without changing the shape of the yarn and allowing it to incorporate plenty of air, it is possible to create a fluffy fabric with a good amount of kickback, which offers the ultimate comfort when worn.
