A commercial version was produced based on the tanker jacket worn by armored units' tank drivers and crew, and was manufactured and sold to the civilian market.
The main material is a lightweight, densely woven cotton chino cloth. It is cold mercerized to give it a firm texture and a sophisticated sheen. It comes in three colors: olive drab, sand beige, and urban black, which is not usually found in vintage items.
The lining is quilted. The thickness of the quilting is different for the body, which needs protection from the cold, and for the sleeves, which need more movement. The padding provides lightweight insulation and is light, warm, and comfortable to wear. Thinsulate EX-Soft is used. It can be washed with water or with a petroleum-based dryer.
The zipper is a Talon Zipper with a leather tab that makes it easy to open and close even when wearing gloves.
Dyed and carefully knitted circular ribbing is used around the neck, wrists, and hem to prevent wind from entering. The stand-up collar design of the Tanker Jacket is unique and sets it apart from other flight jackets.
There is a storm flap inside the front zipper to prevent wind from entering.
The back features action pleats that extend from the shoulders to the hem for ease of movement.
It does not restrict arm movement and increases the range of motion.
The front is simple with no protrusions. The slim silhouette is designed to allow quick escape from the narrow interior of a tank, and the side pockets are set slightly lower than the high position for ease of use.
